Six More Phones Added To The YouTube Signature Devices List

Google has just added six new smartphones to its YouTube Signature Devices list. The LG V60 ThinQ, OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, Motorola Edge, Motorola Edge+, and the yet-unannounced Motorola One Fusion+ have all made the cut onto the club. These smartphones are now officially certified to deliver the best YouTube experience.

Introduced in 2018, the YouTube Signature Devices is a program under which Google certifies Android smartphones that meet or exceed certain criteria it has set to ensure the "best-in-class" video-watching experience on its online streaming platform.

These criteria include being able to support high dynamic range (HDR), high frame rate, 4K decoding, VP9 codec, 360-degree videos, and reliable DRM (digital rights management) performance. Google works closely with OEMs to ensure that the phones meet the minimum performance standards for these technologies.

The YouTube Signature Devices program was launched in 2018 with 18 devices. Since then, the club has grown bigger and bigger, with new devices being added regularly. With the most recent additions, it now has over 50 devices.

In order to enter the list, a device must hit the benchmarks for all six technological features Google has set. Firstly, it has to be HDR-certified. This will ensure richer detail, true-to-life colors, and greater contrast in videos.

Support for high frame rate means you get smoother video playback when watching gaming, sports, and action videos. Devices must feature a frame rate greater than 60 fps (frames per second) to earn the YouTube Signature Device badge.

Google also wants devices to support 4K decoding in order to deliver the best YouTube experience. 4K decoding ensures that you'll see videos in high resolution and stunning clarity on VR (virtual reality).

Devices must also be compatible with the VP9 profile 2 for video decoding. With this next-generation video codec technology, watching YouTube videos will consume 30 percent less bandwidth without affecting overall video playback quality.

Support for 360-degree videos is also a must, as they offer an all-new video watching experience on mobile devices. This technology ensures that you are in complete control of the viewing experience.

Lastly, Google wants devices to support YouTube's own DRM for premium video content. "From YouTube TV to rental movies, Signature Devices seamlessly stream premium content without disrupting your viewing experience," the company says.

All of the 50+ devices that you can find in the YouTube Signature Devices list have passed through Google's rigorous testing criteria for these technologies.

So if you're planning to buy any of those, or already own one, rest assured that your phone provides the best possible experience when watching YouTube videos.
